Girls in ICT - Special Edition (Youth Inspire Youth)
Encouraging girls and young women to consider careers in information and communication technologies.
The International Girls in ICT Day is intended to create a global environment that empowers and encourages girls and young women to consider careers in the growing field of information and communication technologies (ICT). An initiative of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), the Girls in ICT day has been celebrated every fourth Thursday of April since 2011, but until 2016 it had never been celebrated in Seychelles.
The global issue of a minority of women and girls taking up careers in ICT is common in Seychelles. One of the sustainable development goals (goal 5) is to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.
The challenge was to hold an event which would encourage young girls and women to consider careers in ICT and help Seychelles move closer to achieving its sustainable development goals.
WHAT WE DID
In partnership with the University of Seychelles and Seychelles National Youth Council, SYAH organised an event to mark International Girls in ICT Day.
The whole-day event was attended by girls and young women from secondary/post-secondary schools and the University of Seychelles at the point of making a career decision. In the morning, several young ladies having a career in ICT presented their journey in their respective careers and inspired the participants. The afternoon session involved hands-on ICT experience for the participants whereby they engaged in basic software coding in the computer lab.
